The ring will not affect a being without a sense of smell. The ring's effects begin to quickly fade once an afflicted individual is out of range. An afflicted individual has no inherent knowledge that he or she was affected, but may suspect it if the individual displayed unusual behavior.

As with all mind-controlling effects, use of the Scent Ring is considered a crime in Hyrule. Since its effect is subtle and not dominating, it is generally considered a relatively minor offense--akin to petty theft.
