A '''commshell''' appears as a castropod (spiral) seashell of varying color, usually of a size equivalent to a Hylian's hand. One of these is intended to be able to communicate with other commshells of the same "frequency," and thus one is useless by itself. When several commshells are part of the same frequency--they can effectively function as modern radio communication system, albeit with crystal-clear sound. Any sound which goes in one, quietly but clearly comes out the others in the set. A commshell not in use is usually stuffed with an insulating material, to prevent undesired sounds from emitting.

The frequency of a '''commshell''' cannot be changed. A new commshell must be acquired instead. Unless stated otherwise, any given commshell in Hyrule is assumed to function on the same frequency as all other commshells.
