Foreign Language is a utility trait, and an innate racial perk of several races: Picori, Sheikah, Subrosian, Tokay, and Twili. Because this is an innate racial perk, all of the benefiting races must have this perk upon character creation, but gain it for free. Other races cannot gain this treasure, but can emulate it by acquiring a Jabber Nut or a Book of Mudora.

The vast majority of Hyrule grew up speaking Hyrulean, or in some cases, came from societies which had no structured language. For varying reasons, each of the races with this trait are fluent in a language other than the common Hyrulean tongue. Twili hail from the Twilight Realm, where Twilit is the common tongue, and have only learned Hyrulean as a second language. Similarly, Subrosians hail from far beneath the world's surface, where Subrosian is the primary language, and Hyrulean is supplemental. Most Tokay have spent their entire lives on Crescent Island, speaking a simple nameless tongue combined with broken Hyrulean. Picori, being tiny creatures, usually can't even hear Hyruleans, and thus depend primarily on the Minish language. Sheikah actually speak Hyrulean primarily, but their adherence to ancestral tradition usually enables them to know Ancient Hylian--the archaic tongue from which Hyrulean evolved. In every case, it is assumed the character can speak both Hyrulean and the language of his or her race.

In all of these cases, the speaker of the foreign language is able to communicate with it to others who understand it. A conversation between two Subrosians, for example, is rarely understood by the commoners of Hyrule. It is assumed that most characters with a Foreign Language speak Hyrulean as their secondary language, and may be less fluent than native speakers.
