At a glance, a compass resembles a normal, relatively modern compass capable of fitting in one's palm. Its needle normally points north. In addition to functioning like a normal compass, however, it has an additional effect.

The needle on the compass can occasionally locate certain other objects, depending upon the compass holder's personality and her strongest desires of the moment. If she has an overwhelming urge to battle a powerful creature, for instance, the compass will direct her to such a creature. By contrast, a user filled with avarice may be directed to a chest filled with rupees. Regardless, this particular effect of the compass can only be used through sheer concentration of that desire, and cannot locate anything beyond a distance of about 600 feet (1/8th of a mile, or about 180 meters,). This effect is not reliable, however, as some objects simply cannot be located by it.

This treasure is a racial perk for Hylians. As such, a Hylian can choose to gain it as a perk upon character creation. If a Hylian chooses to gain this perk at some point after creation, the perk costs 15 rupees less than the listed cost.

Trivia

  • This treasure's ability to find specific objects is comparable to Dowsing. The latter works over a much longer distance and without fail, but requires the user to touch a piece of the original object.
  • The Compass treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in The Legend of Zelda. More information about the canonical version of this treasure can likely be found on Zelda Wiki.
