Elemental Gems are a family of small, strange magical gems. Each has a strange property by itself, but is primarily used as a material. A skilled Weaponsmith can use them as materials in creating a melee weapon, ranged weapon, or ammunition Supply. Each gem has a special ability, which can be activated at will by the wielder of a weapon made from it. If one gem is used, the gem's special ability can be used once per hour. If two gems are used, it can be used once per minute. If three gems are used, it can be used once every few seconds.
An Outfitter is able to use certain gems in more limited, but more varied capacities. These potential uses are described in each gem's section as relevant to that gem.
Fire Gem
A Fire Gem has an appearance similar to a ruby, and belongs to the Fire field. One costs 8 rupees. If a Fire Gem is rubbed vigorously, or impacted against a hard surface, it will create warmth and glow a dim red.
A weapon crafted with a Fire Gem effectively has a built-in Fire Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon gains an inflaming property. It will glow red, and on its next impact will release an incinerating burst of flames.
A weapon crafted with both a Fire Gem and Ice Gem will have the two gems cancel the effects of each other.
An Outfitter can craft a pair of Scorching Socks, or other piece of Footwear with the same effect, using 2 Fire Gems and 1 Nullrock.
Ice Gem
An Ice Gem has an appearance similar to a sapphire, and belongs to the Ice field. One costs 8 rupees. If an Ice Gem is placed is submerged in less than a gallon (or about 4 liters) of water or similar fluid, the fluid will freeze solid within the hour. Other fluids will usually drop in temperature.
A weapon crafted with an Ice Gem effectively has a built-in Ice Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon gains a freezing property. It will glow blue, and on its next impact will release a subzero burst of magically freezing air, usually freezing solid a portion of whatever it strikes.
A weapon crafted with both a Fire Gem and Ice Gem will have the two gems cancel the effects of each other.
An Outfitter can craft a pair of Freezing Footwear, or other piece of Footwear with the same effect, using 2 Ice Gems and 1 Nullrock.
Shock Gem
A Shock Gem has an appearance similar to moonstone, and belongs to the Electric field. One costs 8 rupees. If a Shock Gem is touched to a wet part of the body, such as the tongue, it will release a small, abrupt jolt of electricity.
A weapon crafted with a Shock Gem effectively has a built-in Shock Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon gains an electrifying property. It will glow with audibly crackling sparks, and on its next impact will release a sudden jolt of electricity, usually shocking and stunning whomever it strikes.
An Outfitter can craft a Shock Ring, or other piece of Handgear with the same effect, using 2 Shock Gems and 1 Nullrock.
Wind Gem
A Wind Gem has an appearance similar to an emerald, and belongs to the Wind field. One costs 6 rupees. If a Wind Gem is held in the hand, the holder can supposedly feel the gem trying to push in whatever direction the wind is blowing in the vicinity.
A weapon crafted with a Wind Gem effectively has a built-in Wind Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon will gain a windy property. It will glow a pale green, and be surrounded in a weak vortex of wind. On its next impact, the weapon will deal normal damage, but cause a sudden and overwhelming gust to blow back the struck enemy, capable of sending a lightweight Korok flying or knocking down a heavy Goron.
Force Gem
A Force Gem has an appearance similar to a tiger's eye, and belongs to the Force field. One costs 6 rupees. If a Force Gem is held in the hand, the holder can supposedly feel a pulse similar to a heartbeat emanating from the stone.
A weapon crafted with a Force Gem effectively has a built-in Force Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon will gain a deep, pulsing property. It will pulse and produce a deep thumping sound. On its next impact, the weapon will deal normal damage, but cause a sudden and overwhelming forceful impact to blow back the struck enemy, capable of sending a lightweight Korok flying or knocking down a heavy Goron.
Poison Gem
A Poison Gem has an appearance similar to a bloodstone, and belongs to the Earth field. One costs 8 rupees. If a Poison Gem is licked, the holder will feel a mild temperature flair in his body, akin to a minor sickness.
A weapon crafted with a Poison Gem effectively has a built-in Poison Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon will gain a poisonous and corrosive property. It will glow a sickly green, and be so corrosive that, if it were to touch a Hylian's skin, would easily burn it off. However, it is not capable of corroding metals without an extremely extended period of time. In addition, direct contact with this energy, such as through the skin, causes a diseased reaction that begins after a couple minutes, resulting in feverish symptoms and blurred, dizzy behavior. Contact directly with the bloodstream results in even more severe symptoms. These symptoms usually subside after a day, or when the afflicted individual is subjected to an appropriate Healing effect.
Light Gem
A Light Gem has an appearance similar to a pale piece of amber, and belongs to the Light field. One costs 10 rupees. Any light shone through one or more Light Gems is approximately tripled in its intensity, without being refracted.
A weapon crafted with a Light Gem effectively has a built-in Light Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon gains a righteous, smiting property. It will glow with white-yellow light, and brightly illuminate several feet (or a few meters) around it. On its next impact, the weapon will release a searing force of light, usually shocking and stunning whomever it strikes, and will simultaneously release a painfully bright flash. The damage dealt to an undead monster or entity with a Dark Affinity is greatly increased.
A weapon crafted with both a Light Gem and Shadow Gem will have the two gems cancel the effects of each other.
Shadow Gem
A Shadow Gem has an appearance similar to obsidian, and belongs to the Shadow field. One costs 10 rupees. If a Shadow Gem is pressed against a solid, nonliving object, every part of the object within six inches (or about 15 centimeters) of the gem will appear to be a midnight black. When the Shadow Gem is removed, the object will immediately return to its normal appearance. Only one Shadow Gem can affect an object in this way at a time.
A weapon crafted with a Shadow Gem effectively has a built-in Shadow Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon will appear pitch-black. On the weapon's next impact, it will release a nightmarish force of evil, usually causing intense pain and overwhelming fear in whomever it strikes, and will simultaneously darken the entire vicinity for a brief moment. The pain felt exceeds the actual damage, and the fear will begin to subside after the blow.
A weapon crafted with both a Light Gem and Shadow Gem will have the two gems cancel the effects of each other.
Water Gem
A Water Gem has an appearance similar to a rich piece of lapis, and belongs to the Water field. One costs 8 rupees. If a Water Gem is placed on a surface, a puddle of cool water will form around it.
A weapon crafted with a Water Gem effectively has a built-in Water Enchantment. When the wielder activates the special ability of his weapon, the weapon will gain a wet property. It will take on a glossy appearance and begin exuding droplets of condensation across the surface of the weapon. On its next impact, the weapon will release a powerful burst of cool water, usually denting and wearing at steel, while blistering or tearing portions of softer materials that it strikes.
