Phantasmal Flame
Type Utility Magical Item
Fields Fire, Poe, Transform, Shadow, Undead
Cost 20 rupees

Phantasmal Flame appears as a burning wisp of violet fire. This is a material which can be used by a Weaponsmith to create a weapon or shield. An Outfitter can use it to create armor or any other garment. The flame is said to belong belonging to a vengeful poe whose regrets tie him to the material world.

To make an armor with Phantasmal Flame requires double the normal amount of material. Thus, 40 rupees worth of this material is required. A weapon skillfully soaked in Phantasmal Flame by a skilled Weaponsmith gains the ability to become ethereal. When ethereal, the affected weapon has the ability to phase through all non-living objects as if they had never existed; however, it is incapable of phasing through organic creatures and undead monsters. This in effect negates the effect of nonmagical armor.

To make armor, clothing, or a shield, only the normal amount of this material is required. Armor, clothing, or a shield affected by Phantasmal Flame also gains the ability to become ethereal. When ethereal, the affected item becomes transparent and weightless. Organic objects are still deflected by this invisible armor, but physical objects pass through effortlessly.

Whether weapon or armor, the affected item's transformation into its ethereal form, or back into its physical form, takes less than a second. What triggers the change depends on how the item is crafted, but is usually a phrase or gesture. Once the change is triggered, there's a delay of a few seconds before the transformation is complete.

Trivia
