Compaction Thread (material)
Type Utility Magical Item
Fields Transform
Cost 15 rupees

Compaction Thread is a colorless, magical thread with similar texture to cotton. It is primarily used by tailors to craft magical garments, but has an effect in of itself. Whenever a great length of thread--at least 300 feet (100 yards)--is wrapped around a single object, that object will abruptly shrink in size as soon as it is so wrapped. Specifically, both it and the thread are reduced to 10% of their original size and mass. After being unwrapped, both return to their normal size. While this thread can be applied to extremely large objects, such as buildings, it must completely enwrap the object several times over, and thus may be difficult and time-consuming to completely wrap. Objects tied into the ground itself, like mountains, cannot be shrunk, as the thread apparently considers such objects to only be part of the planet, and not separate entities.

Using one instance of Compaction Thread, an appropriately skilled tailor can produce an Adventure Pouch, Gnat Hat, or another worn garment which functions identically to the Gnat Hat.

Alternatively, Compaction Thread can be interwoven with any other tailor materials to make a garment which has the shrinking properties of the Gnat Hat. In this way, the resulting garment gains the effects of the Gnat Hat, as well as the appropriate effects of the other tailor materials used.

Trivia

  • Compaction Seeds, used by botanists, have a similar shrinking effect.
  • The Compaction Thread (material) treasure is an original creation by one of Hyrule Castle's members. Its concept is credited to Guy.
