A Transformation Mask can only be obtained with the passing of an individual of a given race, who has sorrows left in this world. When the Song of Healing is played in memory of the being, the soul is healed and what is left behind is a mask corresponding to that being's particular race. For example, a Goron's soul would leave behind a "Goron Mask." While this is the traditional means by which a Transformation Mask is created, it can also be inherited or obtained from someone else who first obtained the mask. Donning this mask bends and morphs the wearer into that race so long as it is worn, often keeping some aspects of the wearer's own appearance alongside the one who has passed.
Depending on the mask and the one who wears it, some psychological aspects and personality traits of the original body may rub off on whoever is transformed by the mask while they are transformed. For example, even if a Deku Scrub is normally both a coward and deathly afraid of water, donning the mask of a brave Zora warrior likely grants him more courage and relative comfort while submerging himself in water. More specific traits, such as fondness for specific animals, pet peeves, or biases against certain topics, can also be passed along. In rare instances, the user's personality might completely change while he is transformed.
The user's PWC does not change in gaining the mask mask. Donning the mask causes him to temporarily loses any racial perks which are innate or distinct to his race. Simultaneously, he gains any racial perks which are innate to the new race. This is reversed when he transforms back to normal.
With the access to the form of a new race, the mask-owner becomes capable of learning distinct racial perks for the new race, but can only use such perks while in the new race's form. For example, a Hylian who transformed into a Rito could learn Winged Flight in his new form, but would only be able to use it in that form. For the purpose of treasures, he counts as both his original race as well as any race to which he can transform with a Transformation Mask. (As such, a Hylian who can transform into a Goron gets a rupee discount on both Hylian and Goron racial perks.) Otherwise, none of the user's treasures change, unless a given treasure depends on one's race.
A player cannot gain a Transformation Mask which transforms a character into a race the player would not otherwise be able to play. For example, a player who hasn't earned the ability to play a Darknut cannot gain a Darknut Mask for any of his characters.
Trivia
- The Mask Collector Major treasure enables one to acquire many Transformation Masks for much lower costs, but poses strict limits on what other treasures the user can acquire.
- The Transformation Mask treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in Majora's Mask. More information about the canonical version of this treasure can likely be found on Zelda Wiki.
