Flying Broom, also known as Witch's Broom, is a famous but rare magical item. As its name suggests, it is a broom with the strange ability to effortlessly hover and fly, so long as it is straddled and ridden.

Depending on the size of the broom, it is generally able to fit and carry multiple passengers. Three Kokiri or children are generally able to fit on one, while two Hylians or similarly-sized adults are able to fit on one. On the extreme side, even one full-sized Lynel is able to somewhat awkwardly fit on a single, specially-sized broom.

While straddled, the broom will hover in place. Depending on how the user leans or grips the handle, the broom will accelerate in any given direction, even straight down, straight up, or in a reverse direction. So long as it isn't overloaded, the broom is able to accelerate quickly, and can reach speeds up to, roughly, 35 mph (or 15 km/h) in any direction. It can stop quickly, and is able to rapidly change direction. If the rider releases the broom, it will cease to hover, and become a normal broom until it is straddled again. As such, being struck off a high-flying broom can be a lethal injury.

Alternatively, a Flying Carpet can be gained for the same cost. For so long as the user sits on it with crossed legs, it enables flight in the same manner as the Flying Broom.

Either Flying Carpet or Flying Broom can be a racial perk for Gerudo. A Gerudo can choose to gain it as a perk upon character creation, but unlike a normal perk, this treasure consumes two perk "slots." If a Gerudo chooses to gain this perk at some point after creation, the perk costs 15 rupees less than normal.

The Sentient Broom, or Sentient Carpet, augment can be gained simultaneously with the original treasure, or separately at a later time. The broom or carpet becomes able to understand and obey any of the owner's spoken commands. For example, the user can command the broom or carpet to hover indefinitely, or go in any spoken direction. It is even able perform complex actions such as fetching a coat from a rack, or even sweeping the floor. It cannot sense phenomenon the owner cannot sense--and as such cannot be used to scout, or see in darkness if the user cannot. The broom is not able to effectively attack or defend itself in combat.

Additionally, the broom will not function for anyone else but the owner nor carry anyone else upon it, without explicit permission from its current owner. The owner may command the broom to transition to the ownership of someone else, either indefinitely or for a specified period of time.

Trivia

  • Flying Broom is one of several treasures which enable the user to fly, alongside Hover, Wing Tunic, and Winged Flight.
  • The Flying Broom treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in Ocarina of Time. More information about the canonical version of this treasure can likely be found on Zelda Wiki.
