The subcategories within appropriately divide treasures into three, by their origin:
- Canonical Treasures appeared verbatim in the official Zelda series, and have been interpreted into Hyrule Castle. Names were given to treasures whose names are canonically unknown.
- Borderline Treasures did not appear verbatim in the official Zelda series, but appeared in other media related to the main series, such as a comic book or Super Smash Bros.
- Interpreted Treasures did not appear verbatim in any known Zelda media, but from context clues given, could explain phenomena that is otherwise not explicitly explained.
- Original Treasures were created by a current or former member of Hyrule Castle.
