Unusual Background is a utility trait, and a universal racial perk. As such, any character can choose to gain it as a perk upon character creation. No character may acquire this treasure after character creation. Usually, any character with this perk is an exception to the normal expectations of his or her race.

A character with an Unusual Background cannot gain any other racial perks. In effect, this perk takes up all three "slots" a character normally has for racial perks. In exchange, the character may gain one racial perk of another race. Generally, the perk chosen must be explained reasonably in the character's backstory. For example, a Goron could arguably have trained himself to use the Electric Aura typically used by Sea Zora, but could not reasonably have grown a Zora's Boomerang Fins onto his arms.
