Mushroom Spores appear as an orange dust with a bizarre odor, collected from specific varieties of mushrooms. On their own, these spores seem to have no significant effect. However, any form of Crafter can use the spores as a material in crafting, resulting in a mysterious and bizarre effect.

A Blacksmith or Woodworker can mix the spores into a weapon he or she crafts. The resulting weapon is magically nonlethal. Any injury it would inflict that could cause permanent injury is pulled back just enough to only cause a minor injury. A mace swing with bone-breaking force is pulled back enough to only cause a severe bruise. An axe intended to chop off a wrist only cuts it. The resulting injury is still painful, but will generally be nonlethal. Attacks to particularly sensitive spots, such as the eyes or neck, may still cause permanent injury or even death. The spores aren't flawless, and can allow death if the wielder isn't carefully trying to avoid it.

A Tailor can craft a piece of cloth or string, which can be either wrapped over a weapon, or tied to it. The affected weapon has the same effect as if it was crafted. An arrow tied with this cloth wouldn't penetrate the heart, and a saber wrapped in it wouldn't cut through the stomach. This cloth is more versatile, but its effect can be lost if it slips off the weapon.

Finally, a Botanist can concentrate the spores down into a seemingly magical oil, enough to apply to one weapon. Any weapon coated in this oil permanently has the effect of the Mushroom Spores, as if it had been crafted by a Blacksmith or Woodworker who used them.

Trivia

  • In effect, this material gives a weapon a built-in Nonlethal Enchantment.
  • The Mushroom Spores (material) treasure is an original creation by one of Hyrule Castle's members. Its concept is credited to Guy.
