Fusion Earrings
Type Utility Magical Item
Fields Headgear, Transform
Cost 100 rupees

Fusion Earrings are an extremely rare artifact, but appear as normal earrings. Each earring contains a tiny orb with a swirl of opposing colors--such as black and white, or orange and blue. Notably, their only effect is to fuse two separate beings into one. Separation of this fused being into its two halves is notoriously difficult.

Unlike most treasures, Fusion Earrings cannot be obtained during character creation. They can, however, otherwise be obtained like any normal treasure.

When worn normally, these earrings have no extraordinary effect. If each of the earrings is worn on a separate ear by two different individuals, however, their bodies will feel a slight attraction to one another. If these two bodies come within, roughly, arm's reach of one another, an extremely strange reaction occurs. Both bodies are mashed together in a flash of blinding light and booming sound, not unlike the strike of a lightning bolt. The result is that the two beings will have combines into one. The fused being contains the combined mind and body of both individuals, created solely from the traits of both individuals. It is commonly believed that this being is superior to a being who is not fused, as it has effectively lived two lives prior to its fusing, and reaps the full benefits of both lives.

Notably, the Fusion Earrings will have disappeared, and are not worn by the fused individual.

Surprisingly, the fused being can be difficult to predict, especially if the two beings to be fused have never been fused before. A fusion between a Kokiri and grown Hylian, for example, would presumably result in a being that is halfway between a child and adult, but never ages. It could, however, result in a full Hylian adult that never ages, too. A fusion between an anger-prone individual and a very easy-going person could result in someone who is neither, switches between extremes, or even someone who is still anger-prone or easy-going.

Regardless, the fused being always contains the knowledge of both individuals, and any physical objects are not fused. As such, all treasures will likely be retained. The fused being is often wearing the clothing of both individuals (although in cases of differently-sized individuals, this may mean one set of the clothing is broken). Fusing two individuals of different gender may result in a being who is of either gender, or even neither gender.

Notably, any being fused either by these earrings (or by a Fusion Dance) is unable to fuse again with another being.

Affecting Player-Characters Permanently

If two different player-characters are permanently fused with the rings, it is strongly suggested that the resulting character be submitted for approval on its own, as a separate character. (Alternatively, one of the previous character pages could incorporate the attributes from the other.) This new character would likely retain all treasures and rupees of the two beings used to create it--excluding perhaps certain racial perks, as appropriate. The new character's PWC should still contain the same amount of points overall, but may adhere to one character, the other, or an average of the two.

If a player-character fuses with a non-player character, the player-character's page should be edited to incorporate the attributes gained from the non-player-character. The player-character's PWC is allowed to shift by up to 3 points. That is, a character gain effectively add 1 to 3 points to any aspect(s) of his PWC, but must then lose an equal number of points to one or more other aspects.

Remember, a fused character cannot then fuse again.

Fission

The fusion caused by these earrings is notoriously difficult to undo, but it can be done. Fission can be acquired with this treasure, or at a later time as an augment. Players are encouraged to create their own methods of fission, as none have been recorded.

Regardless, fission will separate the two beings back into their original halves. If they have been fused for a long time, the halves will have aged appropriately, and may see other changes such as an adjustment in fat or muscle mass. Regardless, all of these changes will have been possible without the use of Fusion Earrings.

Gaining Fission causes the Fusion Earrings to reappear, and thus they can be used again. However, every time a pair of characters perform fission, fission must be regained as a 30-rupee treasure.

Trivia

  • While the Fusion Earrings create a semi-permanent fusion between two individuals, the Fusion Dance is more useful for creating temporary fusions.
  • The Fusion Earrings treasure is an original creation by one of Hyrule Castle's members. Its concept is credited to Guy. The Fusion Earrings are heavily based on the Potara Earrings, which appear in Dragon Ball Z and related media.
