Type Utility Magical Item

Sentience Sap is a strange material, which a Weaponsmith can imbue into any item he crafts.  An Outfitter can also imbue this material into any item she crafts, but must use two instances of the material, doubling its cost.  Particularly powerful or magical items can benefit more easily from this sap.  When crafting an item that costs at least 60 rupees in materials (before adding the sap), Sentience Sap can be gained and added for free.

The sap itself appears no different than normal sap, but gains a strange property when worked into a skillfully forged item.  The item itself becomes able to magically think and speak, as if it was a living creature with similar mental and vocal capabilities to a Hylian, despite not having a mouth.  Similarly, it is able to see without eyes, and hear without ears.  Unlike truly living creatures, it has no need to breathe or eat, but may occasionally enter periods of dormant inactivity not unlike sleep.  Similarly, it cannot feel with senses of touch or smell--although may it still dislike being damaged or broken, despite being unable to feel pain.  Seemingly as a result of being unable to move, the item's personality tends to not get bored or tired.  If this item is separated from a wielder or wearer for more than several minutes, it will temporarily lose its sentience until it returns to a wielder or wearer.  Destroying the item will similarly kill the personality contained within it.

The personality associated with the item seems to be random, but it often grows to either compliment or oppose its wielder.  As with a living being's personality, the item tends to keep the same personality throughout its "life."  One of these personalities rarely, if ever, seems to show significant signs of maturation or aging.

For the purposes of other treasures, an item crafted with sentience sap is still considered an inanimate object, not alive, dead, or undead.  Similarly, it cannot gain its own treasures, even if it would be theoretically able to use them.

Trivia

The Sentience Sap (material) treasure is an original creation by one of Hyrule Castle's members. Its concept is credited to Guy.
