A Capture Staff usually appears as a golden cane, nearly as tall as its wielder, with a small white-glowing orb at its tip. By pouring one's raw magic power into the cane and swinging it, a white bubble will shoot from the the furthest point of the swing. This bubble is about the size of a child's fist, and travels at a slow speed for a thrown object, usually akin to a Hylian's sprinting speed (12 mph, or 19 km/h). Any single organic, living creature hit by this bubble becomes entrapped in a bubble slightly larger than the target's height. The bubble itself must hit the creature on its natural body, not any coverings like cloth or metal.

This bubble is extremely difficult to break from either side, and even most magic cannot penetrate it. However, sound waves and gas are capable of passing through. It takes either a very powerful blow (usually an explosive or powerful weapon technique), or a continuous struggle of several smaller blows to break it. Creatures unconditioned for combat usually cannot break it. Most monsters or combatants, barring particularly weak ones like Keese or ChuChu, can break themselves out in less than a minute even without a powerful technique.

Notably, the harder the user swings the staff, the faster the projectile will fire, and the more durable the resulting bubble will be. However, extremely few individuals have the power to exceed the standards described earlier.

The bubble will dissipate either after about an hour's time, or after the Capture Staff is swung again. In this way, no more than one creature can be simultaneously trapped by one Capture Staff.

Trivia

The Capture Staff treasure does not appear verbatim within the official Zelda series. However, it does appear in The Legend of Zelda animated series.
