The Magical Rod, or Magic Rod, is a magical item which can be used to produce an offensive spell-like effect. A Magical Rod appears as a scepter, usually comparable in length to the wielder's arm, with a dimly-glowing gem at its tip.

To activate rod, the user merely swings it while focusing his magic energy through it. From the rod's tip will launch a small, compact orb of electricity comparable in size to a Hylian's head, which shoots forward with velocity comparable to a fastball and force comparable to a strong punch. This ball of light electrocutes the target for a few brief seconds, then immediately vanishes. The projectile can travel 30 feet (or about 10 meters). Normally, the wielder can use the Magical Rod's magical effect once every 20 seconds. The rod will not function until its energy is recharged.

Strangely, any magical item can reflect the ball back at its caster with a well-timed swing. The caster may launch it back using his or her own magic, but repeated deflections will speed up the velocity of the spell, until the caster or the target becomes incapable of keeping pace. Contact with any item which might nullify the projectile, such as a weapon forged from Cold Iron, will instead bounce the projectile back in this manner.

Various elemental enchantment spells can be applied to the Magical Rod, allowing it to behave like other spells. Fire Enchantment, Ice Enchantment, Shadow Enchantment, Light Enchantment, or Wind Enchantment can cause causes the projectile to respectively function like Fire, Ice, Shadow Ball, Holy Bolt, or Wind. In all of these cases, the projectile created by any modified version of Magical Rod can still be struck back to the caster easily, unlike the emulated spell.

Trivia

  • A Weaponsmith can treat a Magical Rod as a material for the purpose of combining its effects with other materials or treasures into one weapon. For determining how many materials the Weaponsmith can craft into one item, treat this item as though it had a set cost of 20 rupees.
  • The Magic Bolt spell can produce a nearly identical effect, and thus it is considered a variant of Magical Rod.
  • Items with comparable effects include Fire Rod and Ice Rod.
  • Magical Rod produces one of several projectiles that can be guided or deflected by a Cane of Mago.
  • This treasure is as one of several that can reduce the cost of Cannon Shout.
  • The Magical Rod treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in The Legend of Zelda. More information about the canonical version of this treasure can likely be found on Zelda Wiki.
