Silver Scale (material)
Type Defensive Organic Item
Fields Protect, Water, Zora
Cost 25 rupees

Silver Scales appear as shimmering scales shed by one or more Zora, though typically lose their silvery sheen when forged into armor. The material itself has a strange effect, causing anyone who holds it to psychologically feel like he can hold his breath longer, and dive deeper, underwater. This treasure represents an apple supply to forge a suit of armor, or tailor a piece of clothing. Indeed, Silver Scales are primarily used as a material for a skilled Tailor, Blacksmith, or Woodworker. A Tailor has a particularly easy time with these scales, and as such, may treat this treasure as if it has a cost of 20 rupees.

An appropriately skilled Crafter can use a single supply of Silver Scales to craft a functional Zora Tunic, or other clothing which has similar properties of protecting its wearer from water and drowning. Whatever clothing is produced must cover the majority of the user's body to offer protection in the same way as a Zora Tunic. A particularly skilled Crafter can combine Silver Scales with other Materials to combine their effects into one product.

Whoever wears a piece made from Silver Scales will be mostly protected from water damage, and cannot drown in water for so long as it is worn. While the forceful impact of water can still cause harm, soaking in calm water for any length of time will not cause harm to the wearer. The wearer will also negate any weakness to water he or she would otherwise have, making it particularly useful for Koroks, Subrosians, and Deku Scrubs.

Trivia

  • Like Silver Scales protect from water, similar materials can provide protection from other danger sources: Dodongo Hide protects from heat, White Hide protects from cold, Gratitude Crystals protect from Shadow damage, and Evil Crystals protect from Light damage.
  • The Silver Scale (material) treasure does not appear verbatim within the official Zelda series. However, it can be interpreted to exist from context, initially so in Ocarina of Time.
