Cold Iron (material)
Type Offensive Mechanical Item
Fields Disable
Cost 40 rupees

Cold Iron is a strange, rare, and powerful metal which itself is not magical, but seems to have explainable properties akin to magic. As a a material, this treasure is intended to be used in crafting. When a blacksmith crafts an object from Cold Iron, that object becomes capable of disrupting magic. If the crafted object comes into contact with a magical item or a manifested spell, the magical effects of that item or spell are nullified for at least 1 minute. If the magic effects would otherwise continue to persist longer than 1 minute, they will resume after this minute has passed. In the case of a spell, this does not prevent the spell from being cast again, and cannot prevent a struck spellcaster from casting spells. Cold Iron is completely unable to hinder any effect produced from a Major treasure.

In effect, Cold Iron is primarily used to create a weapon, shield, or a pair of gauntlets. For reasons currently unknown, wearing Cold Iron on any part of one's body other than the arms causes it to act instead like normal iron. A weapon created through this means is capable of slicing through magical barriers, and nullify magical projectiles like those produced with Fire or Aqua Grenade which it contacts.

To reinstate a fact, nonliving entities (excluding undead) created by non-major magic will be nullified, and will cease to exist. However, living creatures, and undead monsters, which have been produced by magic--such as summoning spells--are not affected by Cold Iron, and will persist even if coming into contact with it.

Because of the nature of Cold Iron, it cannot be smelted with any material that is a Magical Item. Similarly, the wielder of any Cold Iron piece should be careful to not let it contact any Magical Item in the wielder's possession. Finally, any object made from Cold Iron cannot be used as an implement to cast spells, as it will simply nullify the attempted spell before it can be cast.

Trivia

  • The Binding Stone material has a similar effect of negating magic, but instead only prevents the one touching it from casting spells.
  • The Cold Iron (material) treasure is an original creation by one of Hyrule Castle's members. Its concept is credited to Chi.
