Heart of Darkness is a utility trait, and a racial perk for Garo and Twili. As such, a member of either race can choose to gain it as a perk upon character creation, or gain it later as a normal treasure. If the treasure is gained later, a member of either benefitting race may gain it at half its normal cost.
Due to their origins, many Garo and Twili have a natural proficiency for Shadow treasures. When determining the cost of such a treasure, treat each of the user's PWC attributes as each being 2 points higher, to a maximum of 5.

- Similar racial treasures include Illusionist, Infernal Birth, Aquatic Birth, Child of Snowhead, On the Breeze, Heart of the Forest, Gift of Light, Down to Earth, and Hero's Legacy.
- The Heart of Darkness treasure is an original creation by one of Hyrule Castle's members. Its concept is credited to Guy.
