A loftwing is an uncommon companion which appears as a large, round-billed bird, with white feathers on its underside and brightly-colored plumes on its backside. The size of an adult loftwing is comparable to particularly large draft horses, though younger and smaller variants can be more comparable to ponies. A typical loftwing is nearly as intelligent as a Hylian child, but normally cannot speak.

Certain skilled Hylians are able to tame strong loftwings into flying, obedient mounts. This treasure normally represents such a loftwing, which has been trained to be rode by its owner. Most loftwings are able to rode by most races which are neither larger nor heavier than Hylians themselves. As such, most Darknuts, Gorons, and Lynels, cannot ride one effectively. Meanwhile, a typical Picori or Tiny Fairy is too small to control a loftwing on its own. With an appropriate rider, however, a loftwing is able to fly for periods lasting up to a few hours.

If a rider has bonded well with his loftwing, he is able to sense the general direction and status of his loftwing by using the Sense ability, if he possesses it.

As an Unusual Companion

A loftwing can be initially created as an Unusual Companion for 50 rupees. Alternatively, a loftwing that was first acquired as a treasure can become an Unusual Companion for free. In either case, the player must be of at least Regular rank to have an Unusual Companion. The loftwing must be submitted as its own character, following the usual character creation process.

Unlike a normal Loftwing Companion, an Unusual Compaion has its own PWC score, gains its own treasures, can act on its own, and can even be an effective combatant in its own right. It becomes able to speak if it gains a treasure such as Language of Fauna or a Jabber Nut. Needless to say, these exceptional loftwings are particularly rare in Hyrule.

A loftwing that functions as an Unusual Companion may freely gain Winged Flight as an innate racial perk. In addition, it may gain Shuttle Loop as a racial perk.
