A Ball and Chain is a magical item, and is not to be confused with a simpler, nonmagical ball and chain. This treasure is a racial perk for Lizalfos. As such, a Lizalfos can choose to gain it as a perk upon character creation. If a Lizalfos chooses to gain this perk at some point after creation, the perk costs 15 rupees less than the listed cost.

This item is what appears to be a steel sphere approximately 2 feet (or 2/3 meters) in diameter, with a few small spikes across its surface. From this sphere is extended a short chain, usually of a length comparable to the wielder's armspan. Normally, this item can be used as any simple ball and chain weapon, but it gains several distinctly magical functions depending on how it is used.

First and foremost, the ball itself has a constant effect which multiplies the force with which it impacts. The force is comparable to the explosion from a standard Bomb, minus the heat, sounds, and other side-effects from an explosion. As a seeming side-effect from this property, it roughly halves the force any other object exerts upon it. As such, the wielder can use it as a makeshift shield to soften blows.

The other major effect must be intentionally activated. After the wielder spins the ball briefly overhead, using the chain to do so, the weapon gains a temporary magical property. If the ball is thrown, it will propel forward with the chain magically extending so that the user always maintains a firm grip on it. Within a few seconds after the ball is thrown, if the user tugs on the chain, the ball will magically soar back to the wielder. In doing so, it will damage anything it runs into, but will drop harmlessly either into his hands or at his feet, depending on how hard he tugged. If the user waits too long to pull the chain, it will not be able to soar back, and must instead be hauled back manually.

Trivia

  • The Ball and Chain treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in Twilight Princess. More information about the canonical version of this treasure can likely be found on Zelda Wiki.
