Plague is an offensive spell useful for distraction. The user may cast it at will by making a particular gesture with his body. This gesture summons a cloud of shadowy, flying insects which resemble wasps, moths, or locusts, which manifest from his hands, mouth, or another part of his body. This swarm approaches and attacks whatever the caster physically points out to them, capable of mild, non-poisonous points or strings. Alternatively, the swarm can be used to patrol a specific area, and attack any creatures in that area other than the caster. While the swarm causes irritation and distraction, it cannot cause significant injury to most creatures. Non-sentient plants can be eaten quickly by the swarm, however.
The swarm will disintegrate if it is forced to stray more than 15 meters (or about 50 feet) from the caster, or if the swarm persists for more than approximately 5 minutes. The swarm has an instinct to stay huddled together, and cannot be directed to spread over any area larger than 3 meters (or about 10 feet) in diameter.
After the swarm disintegrates, the caster cannot summon a new swarm for the length of the time the previous swarm persisted. For example, if the caster summoned a swarm for a full five minutes, he couldn't summon another one for another five minutes.
The Plague treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in Majora's Mask.
