On its own, a Shield Ring appears as a small jewelry ring to be worn on the finger, with a silver hoop and a gem in the shape of a kite shield.
At will, the wearer of this ring can cause a sudden light to grow from the ring, forming over his hand what appears to be a semitransparent shield out of light. Despite its appearance, this shield is as heavy, sturdy, and dense as a typical steel shield. The shield is only as wide as the user's forearm, and is usually of a round shape, but can also take on a kite shape if the wearer wills it. While this shield is primarily used for martial defense, it exudes a clear white light with luminosity comparable to a torch.
Once a shield is created, the wearer can only cause it to disappear by removing the ring, or breaking the shield itself. Because of this temporary nature, the shield cannot be used for crafting purposes.

The user can gain the Hefty Shield augment simultaneously with the original treasure for an additional cost, or as a separate treasure at a later time. A shield ring with this augment can be used to create much larger shields, although generally they cannot be so large they provide cover for more than one person. A tower shield, or 'mobile wall', would be the largest practical shield to create. These shields are still as heavy as steel shields of their kind, however, and may be difficult to wield properly.

The user can gain the Blink Shield augment simultaneously with the original treasure for an additional cost, or as a separate treasure at a later time. A shield ring with this augment enhances the wearer's control over it. The user can cause the shield to disappear almost instantly without needing to remove the ring. The ring still needs to wait at least one second before it has the energy to create a new shield, however.
