The Eastern Caves form a settlement inhabited by Gerudo and Hylians in Southern Hyrule, and are considered a counterpart to the Western Caves. They lay within the desolate region known as Tantari Desert.
Home largely to the Gerudo race, the Eastern Caves were discovered many years ago, though it would not be a place most Hylians would seek to reside. Upon finding the massive water supply located deep within the large network of caves, the Gerudo established the Eastern Caves as their permanent residence. Out of the stone, the Gerudo carved an aw- inspiring fortress, complete with outer walls, terraces, and towers, which all are connected by a series of tunnels and caverns. Within this labyrinth of tunnels and passages, the Gerudo named the heart of the caves the Gerudo Fortress, a place many Hylians would think twice before approaching due to the nature of the Gerudo themselves.
As Ganon’s recently armies displaced an innumerable amount of Hylians, however, the Gerudo grudgingly opened an alliance with the refugees, accepting them into their home and, to some extent, their culture. In recent days, a large number of Hylians left the Eastern Caves, and few Gerudo, to reclaim the village of Ruto. Despite the refugees, these caves still belong firmly to the Gerudo who take great pride that the Gerudo Fortress is one of few places in Southern Hyrule which never fell to the hands of darkness.
