Death Mountain is located approximately in the center of the known Hyrulean continent, and is one of few known locations that player-characters are generally not able to enter. It is the current epicenter of Ganon's forces, and is virtually impenetrable due to the large armies of monsters which routinely patrol it. Death Mountain itself is the largest mountain in the range of mountains which split Northern Hyrule and Southern Hyrule. Surroundings mountains are known for being active volcanoes, but Death Mountain itself is not.

Historically, the mountain's interior housed a vast series of underground tunnels. Many of these combined to form a location known as Goron City, so-named because it was then housed the largest known population of Gorons. It is commonly believed that the location of this city, combined with the sheer strength of the Goron race, made it the most well-guarded settlement in all the known world.

Despite the city's fortitude, Ganon and his forces sacked following their invasion of Southern Hyrule, driving out the Gorons who survived into the nearby Hylian settlements of Nabooru and Castle Town. In the years since then, Ganon's invasion of Hyrule seems to have abruptly ceased for reasons unknown. Though Southern Hyrule and Death Mountain remain under the control of his forces, he never made a major move into Northern Hyrule. It is known that the mountain has become the stronghold of Ganon's forces, and is even more impenetrable that it once was. It is believed the strongest of Ganon's monsters are housed inside, and, presumably, Ganon himself sits on the throne that once belonged to the Gorons' tribal leader.
