Flatten can be cast in two ways, either on oneself or on another being. When cast on oneself, the caster need only touch the surface of a wall and focus. The caster will abruptly be sucked into the wall in less than a second, becoming a flat "painting" on the wall's surface. The painting resembles the user, and cannot be removed by normal means. At will, the user can move horizontally across the wall as if he was walking, but cannot do anything else aside from exiting the wall. He cannot "walk" to areas of the wall which cannot support the (flat) dimensions his form. Upon exiting, the user will transform back into his normal self. During both entering and exiting, there is a brief moment of forming or deforming where the user is defenseless. | Flatten can be cast in two ways, either on oneself or on another being. Flatten is a highly versatile spell, usable for both offense and defense.
Normally, the caster can only stay as a "painting" for a brief period, which varies slightly from person to person, but lasts for about 1 minute. Like holding one's breath, if it's done for a considerable length of time, the user needs more time to recover before doing it again at such a length.
When the spell is cast on another individual, the caster can choose to give the target freedom of movement, or trap the target as a painting. In either case, the caster must make a physical gesture which launches forth a magical projectile resembling a massive painting frame. This projectile must be aimed at a suitably large wall, or else it will dissipate with no effect as soon as it forms. If the frame strikes a living (or undead) being within its boundary, it will continue to shoot to the wall, pinning the target there and turning him or her into a flat painting.
If the target retains freedom of movement, he will be affected just as if the caster was using this spell on himself. If the caster attempts to trap the target, the target will become unable to move. Although the original version of this spell forever prevented movement to make perfect paintings, none have ever been able to emulate that fabled version of the spell. Instead, the trapped target will be able to move with a surge of willpower. Most intelligent beings will be able to figure it out for the first time in less than an hour, and do so within a few seconds every time thereafter. Weak-willed beings may take longer, while particularly adapt individuals may be able to figure it out more quickly. Once the target forces control over himself as a painting, he can move as well as the caster can. Once the target moves, however, he falls prey to the same time restrictions as normal.
Trivia
- In a player-character versus player-character fight, it is assumed a victim of the offensive version of Flatten can free himself for the first time within a few seconds.
- This spell inflicts a state which can also be achieved on oneself with Ravio's Bracelet. As such, any being negatively affected by Flatten can recover instantly by using Ravio's Bracelet.
- The Flatten treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in A Link Between Worlds. More information about the canonical version of this treasure can likely be found on Zelda Wiki.
