The Western Caves form a settlement inhabited by Hylians in Southern Hyrule, and are considered a counterpart to the Eastern Caves.

Discovered early on in the exploration of Southern Hyrule, this massive network of caves spreads miles underneath the region. This underground phenomenon winds its way under much of the Southern Fields, though the majority of the entrances to the cave system are centralized in one location. Once discovered, the Southern Hyruleans had the wits to consider it as a place of refuge if something ever went terribly wrong. Long before Ganon arrived with his invasion, teams of men and women thoroughly explored much of the cave system, transforming it into a livable place filled with inconspicuous light holes and tapering tunnels.

Ganon’s attack on the lands quickly forced anyone who could to flee underground into the Western Caves. While refugees brought some food with them, those who survived in the Western Caves were forced to grow in ingenuity, finding food wherever they could and taking advantage of the massive lake toward the bottom of the caves. Even now, the Western Caves houses thousands of men, women, and children, the existence of such a haven guarded fiercely from the eyes of evil.
