An Unusual Companion is a special type of race given to animal and animal-like creatures that allows them to be playable in their own right, or in more detail. As its name implies, an Unusual Companion is usually a form of pet or mount to a character of a more capable race, though this does not always need to be the case.
To make one an Unusual Companion, a player must be either a Regular or Veteran, and must forfeit 50 rupees from one of his or her characters specifically to make one Unusual Companion. Any type of creature that doesn't already have a page on the Library (including Combat Companion, Mount, Loftwing, and Monkey) may not be permitted without staff approval. Otherwise, creating an Unusual Companion is very similar to creating a normal one, and uses the normal character creation process.
Most often, an unusual character is of an animal or animal-like species, ranging from a Loftwing to a house cat. Hostile or monster-like animals, such as a Keese or a Wolfos, are also allowed. A normal member of an animal-like species typically has lower intelligence than a Hylian, but an unusual character belonging to the species is assumed to be exceptionally intelligent for its kind, unless otherwise specified. Even so, the unusual character cannot speak the Hyrulean language unless it otherwise could, or if it gains a Jabber Nut specifically to do so.
Although an Unusual Companion can acquire all normal treasures, some of them arguably cannot be used. A house cat couldn't expect to use Warlock Punch, for instance, as the creature hacks limbs appropriate for punching. Similarly, such a creature might have trouble using a Hookshot as its limbs are too short to manipulate the item properly. However, even an intelligent house cat would have everything necessary to cast a spell such as Life, or wear an item like an All-Night Mask. Players should use common sense in deciding which treasures are applicable towards any given companion. In ambiguous cases, it would be wise to consult a staff member.
An Unusual Companion should generally be treated as unusual in the world of Hyrule. Although Hyrule is a mysterious place with many unexpected occurrences, any unusual character is expected to be truly bizarre--and possibly the only one of its kind, born from an uncanny mutation or a backfired spell. After all, it's practically unheard of that a mere cat could cast a spell as potent as Life, or a horse eloquently speaking the words of men even with a Jabber Nut.
Finally, an Unusual Companion does have one undeniable limitation that separates it from a normal character. If a player completes a dungeon or quest using multiple characters, any Unusual Companion does not contribute the normal 10-rupee bonus received for using multiple characters. (In these instances, the Unusual Companion is treated as being a Pet, Mount, or Combat Companion to another character.)
Character Creation Brief
Once an Unusual Companion's species is decided, it can be submitting for approval in much the same way as a character of a normal race. It can be added to another character's page to serve as their companion, or be given a thread in its own right. In either case, the companion's thread must detail who spent the 50 rupees on it, and it must be approved by staff as usual.
An Unusual Companion always begins with a PWC score of 1/1/1. Such a character gains the normal amount of PWC points, according to whether the player is a Regular or Veteran.
Depending on its species, an Unusual Companion may begin with one or more innate racial perks. Plant creatures like Peahats for instance would always gain Plant Composition, while a Chilfos certainly has Frigid Composition. As is normally the case, innate racial perks are gained for free.
In addition to any innate perks, an Unusual Companion can gain up to three universal racial perks, and will likely benefit most from Bonus Treasure and Rupee Riches. Of course, certain types of companions could arguably gain perks that are normally exclusive to other races--such as a Keese gaining Nightvision, or a Wolfos gaining Scent. If the character has two or more wings, but no functional arms, then Winged Flight must be gained as one of its racial perks.
Like a normal character, an Unusual Companion has 100 rupees to spending on its starting treasures.
