The Great Sea--formerly known as the Eastern Sea--is one of the three major regions considered to be part of the civilized world, alongside Northern Hyrule and Southern Hyrule.
Lake Hylia of Northern Hyrule is the primary water source which feeds into saltwater Hyrule Bay, which splits the two halves of Hyrule. This bay feeds into the Great Sea, which stretches across the entire coast of the Hyrule mainland on all sides. As the sea was once thought to be solely to the east, the formally-recognized title of Eastern Sea has since become a misnomer.
Being outside mainland Hyrule, the isles of this sea have been effectively untouched by the recent invasion of Ganon. Largely because of this, Hyruleans have more recently begun to explore and settle the distant islands of this new world. Accurate maps of it have yet to even be made. Because sea travel has become so common, your typical adventurer can easily find a sea-going vessel to traverse this region. (A typical boat which traverses water with sails or rowing can be gained for free, but blackpowder-based weaponry such as cannons must still be acquired as treasures.)
Notable islands of the Great Sea include:
- Dragon Roost Island, located near Hyrule proper, which is hope to the avian Rito race
- The Hylian-inhabited Windfall Island
- The Forsaken Fortress, home to pirates and lowlifes of all races
- Crescent Island, the only known homeland of the elusive Tokay race
- Koholint Island, a strange island known for its odd Hylian and talking animal inhabitants
- The Subrosian Glacier, an icy sheet home to Yooks, which supposedly has well-known gates to the strange land of Subrosia
