Vile Aura is an offensive Shadow spell its user can cast at will. Once cast, a dark emanation of powerful Shadow magic surrounds the caster's entire body for about one to three seconds, hovering a few inches above the surface of his skin. This aura makes his entire body appear pitch-black, and thus practically invisible in areas of darkness.
More significant than how this aura masks is how it inflicts pain. Anyone who comes in contact with the aura, excluding the caster, is filled with momentarily overwhelming agony--said to feel like a thousand molten-hot needles simultaneously drilling into and melting through your skin. As with most shadow-based damage, it is likely to inflict terror and despair. It's virtually impossible to not pull back instinctively after touching the aura, though the pain inflicted is much greater than the actual damage received. Furthermore, the sensations of fear dissipate almost immediately after contact ends. The wounds which form are the result of normal Shadow damage, comparable to the likes of burns or diseased sores.
Because of the strain this spell imposes on one's magic strength, this can normally only be manifested once every 3 minutes. With one level in Magic Power, it can be used once per minute. With two levels in Magic Power, it can be used once every 20 seconds. If the user has a Specialty in Shadow, has a Dark Affinity, or is undead, he is treated as though he has one more level in Magic Power than he actually does.
Trivia
- A foe with a Black Tunic, or other gear crafted from Evil Crystals, would take significantly less damage from this spell than usual.
- The Vile Aura treasure does not appear verbatim within the official Zelda series. However, it can be interpreted to exist from context. Several major enemies in the Zelda series are surrounded by cloaks of dark magic, either lasting or momentary.
