Being roughly half of the landscape of Hyrule, Northern Hyrule is best known for being unaffected by the recent invasion of Ganon, which all but destroyed all of the previous inhabitants of Southern Hyrule. Ganon seemed to have mysteriously ceased his north-heading invasion near Death Mountain and Hyrule Bay, which split Hyrule into its Northern and Southern halves. Because of this, Northern Hyrule is still primarily ruled by civilized Hylians, unlike its southern counterpart.

Northern Hyrule is ruled primarily by the Hylian Royal Family which occupies Castle Town, and governs the nearby Hylian settlements of Nabooru, Lon Lon Ranch, Impa, Darunia, and Mido. The northeast region of Snowhead is occupied mostly by Yeti, and northwest region of Woodfall claimed by numerous forest creatures, both remain mostly untouched by Hylians. To the east are Lake Hylia and Moruge Swamp, which are home to quarreling tribes of Zora. Near the center of Northern Hyrule lies vast praries and meadows, mostly unoccupied, which collectively is known as Hyrule Field.
