A Mount, or Riding Companion, is generally a horse, camel, mule, or similar creature which can be rode and serves as a companion. Every character may have one Mount for free. Additional mounts are allowed if it is appropriate to the character's Profession or backstory.

A mount is roughly defined as a non-flying creature commonly used for riding in at least one region of Hyrule. This includes but is not necessarily limited to a horse, mule, or camel. (Although they are not commonly used for riding in Hyrule itself, giant fish can be used as a swimming mount in the Great Sea, or other large areas of water.) The mount does not have supernatural or extraordinary abilities for a creature of its kind. The mount may be used in combat, but as a general rule lacks exceptional combat strength, and will usually lose in one-on-one combat to a decently strong monster.

As a general rule of thumb, the mount can carry no more than 1 Hylian-sized passenger, or two Kokiri-sized passengers. Gorons, Yeti, and Darknuts are generally too large for such mounts. If the character expends an additional 10 rupees in acquiring the mount, however, the mount improves to an above-average size and strength--such as a draft horse. This larger version is capable of carrying one Goron-sized passenger, two Hylian-sized passengers, or three Kokiri-sized passengers. Unfortunately, Lynels are too large and strangely-shaped to be carried by even these larger mounts.

Due to their size, Picori may be limited on the size of their riding mounts. A Picori is generally allowed to use a relatively odd creature as a mount--such as a hamster--so long as such a creature does not exceed the normal limitations of a riding mount.

If a mount is particularly capable in combat, gains its own treasure(s), or in some way becomes extraordinary for its species, it instead must be treated as an Unusual Character.

As an Unusual Character

Any mount can be initially created as an Unusual Character, or later turned into one. In either case, the cost for doing so is 50 rupees, and requires the player be of at least Regular rank. The mount must be submitted as its own character, following the usual character creation process.

Unlike a normal mount, an Unusual Character has its own PWC score, gains its own treasures, can be as intelligent as a Hylian, can act on its own, and can be an effective combatant in its own right. It becomes able to speak of it gains a treasure such as Language of Fauna or a Jabber Nut. Needless to say, such mounts are particularly rare in Hyrule.

A mount that functions as an Unusual Character may freely gain Centaur Speed as an innate racial perk.

Trivia

  • A Loftwing is a specialized, more expensive companion. In many regards, it functions as a mount that is able to fly.
  • The Mount treasure canonically appears in the Zelda series, initially in Ocarina of Time. More information about the canonical version of this treasure can likely be found on Zelda Wiki.
